about

A tribute to lyricist Johnny Mercer on the occasion of his centennial in 2009.
Mercer - who was also the founder of Capitol Records - wrote over 1500 lyrics, was nominated 18 times for an Academy Award and awarded 4 Oscars for best song.
Beyond that, a wonderful singer in his own right, Mercer more than any other was a singers' lyricist. His ambition was "to write a song that everybody loves and that artists can't wait to sing and record". That never failed. Every vowel is in its perfect spot, the intricate, often interior, rhymes fall into place naturally and the lyric hugs the melody in a way that makes each tune a sheer joy to sing.
To Mercer, writing a song was "an exciting, stimulating experience like an adventure in love" and it is always a real thrill for me to make the audience aware that one great poet wrote such a varied range of timeless lyrics. I was very happy and proud indeed to contribute a little bit to the celebration of his centennial.
